An autumn sunrise at Newfound Gap, reveals the disctinct character of the Great Smoky Mountains. Unlike their counterparts in the western United States the Smoky Mountains are forested up to their top elevations and have notched ridges and crests at the skyline rather than distinct craggy peaks.
